Most parents have no idea babies can and should have their spine checked so they have multiple questions. If you are anything like my wife and I, our baby’s health, safety, and wellness is of the utmost importance to us! That is why finding a chiropractor you can trust is very important.

One common question is “when can I get my child checked?” We regularly check newborn infants – the reason being is this helps them recover from the birthing process trauma. If you watched your child’s birth, you know how much torque, pressure, and stress is placed on the child’s neck and spine when exiting the birth canal. This can cause misalignment of the spine and cranial bones causing pressure on baby’s nervous system.

Does it hurt and is it safe? This is another great question! Baby adjustments are very gentle and look quite different from adjusting an adult. The amount of pressure used to correct the spine is about the same pressure you would use to check a ripe tomato at the grocery store.  Chiropractic is safe & effective for infants and if you are interested in the research, click here. Just like when checking an adult, the restricted area may be a little tender causing your child to wake or slightly startle, but most babies do great and are much happier after.

How do you know if & when they need to be adjusted? Babies are in the beginning stages of their growth and neurological development. Many of the problems parents experience with their newborns and infants are symptoms of a neurological imbalance due to misalignment or pain. When an infant is in pain, they simply avoid that motion or activity that irritates the pain. When this occurs, it creates an unstable foundation for their development.

If your baby has any of the following symptoms, consider a chiropractic consultation.

  • Difficulty breastfeeding

    • If your little one is having trouble latching or feeding on one side, they could be having pain when turning their head. An adjustment can help increase the neck’s range of motion.

  • Colic

    • Colic involves persistent unexplained crying with tensed muscles throughout the abdomen, legs, and fingers. Unfortunately there is still little known on the cause, but chiropractic & looking at diet can often help. Miller JE

  • Head tilting

    • Have your noticed your child only tilts or rotates his or her head to one side? Tension in the neck may be causing a condition know as torticollis, or wryneck. This may indicate a restriction in their neck.

Some additional symptoms worth discussing with a chiropractor are: constipation, chronic ear infections, and acid reflux.

The ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) is one of the leaders in ground breaking studies on the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for children. Results are outstanding and show that chiropractic care is safe for children. Even more significant is that parents reported three unexpected improvements with their child’s care:

  1. Improved immune system function

  2. Improved behavior and attitude

  3. Improved sleeping

“Dr. Nate has proved to be our favorite chiropractor in the area. He made time to adjust our 16 month old when she had an ear infection, making her as comfortable as possible. He even used a little soft lamb to have her hold and use to explain/teach what he would be doing. Dr. Nate very knowledgable, offering up alternatives treatment options for follow up as well. He is truly there for each individual and pours his heart out into bettering people’s lives. We were recommended by a friend… now I am recommending to all of my friends.”
