The Hidden Link Between Emotions and Pain: How Unresolved Emotions Keep You Stuck in Pain

The link between emotions and pain.

Fear, anger, resentment, bitterness, grief, even being frightfully overjoyed—what do all these emotions have in common? Could one of them be the reason for your chronic, recurring pain?

Consider this story of a patient who came to my Chelan, Washington chiropractic clinic for back pain. He was going through a messy divorce, and anyone who has experienced something similar knows the emotional toll it takes on the body. While he believed his back pain was due to a physical issue, the real cause ran deeper: unresolved emotions were weakening key systems in his body, leading to injury and persistent pain.

Whether it’s grief over a lost loved one, fear about finances, or frustration with a nagging injury, emotions have a profound impact on your physical health. Maybe you’re angry with a friend or anxious about re-injuring yourself in the sport you love.

Whatever the emotion, if you don’t process it, your body stores it in specific organs. When triggered, these emotions cause those organs—and their corresponding muscle systems—to weaken, which can lead to injury or pain. At best, these unresolved emotions lead to chronic pain that won’t go away. At worst, they may contribute to disease.

NET Neuro Emotional Chart

In the case of my patient, his emotions were stuck in his liver and gallbladder—organs tied to anger and resentment. We used Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) to release these trapped emotions. Before the session, we could test a strong muscle, but when he thought about his divorce, his body would weaken. Once we cleared the emotions, his strength returned, and his back pain, which was associated with the T9-T11 area (linked to anger and grief), disappeared.

The Connection Between Emotions and Pain

In my practice, I frequently see athletes, people suffering from back pain, neck pain, headaches, and those recovering from automobile accidents. Often, their physical pain is intertwined with emotional stress they may not even be aware of. Unresolved emotions can cause recurring pain, particularly when they disrupt the flow of energy in the body’s meridian system. NET allows us to identify and release those stuck emotions, helping the body to heal fully.

So thorough! Dr. Nate not only gives excellent adjustments, but includes muscle testing and emotional release techniques. These three practices, when done together, create optimal healing inside and out. I highly recommend Living Well Family Chiropractic for a full spectrum whole body healing.

3 Tips to Help Clear Unresolved Emotions:

  • Use Rescue Remedy by Bach Flower: Rescue Remedy is a gentle, natural product made from flower essences, designed to help reduce emotional stress. It’s a simple yet effective way to support emotional balance while you work through deeper issues.

  • Practice Deep Breathing: Focusing on your breath can help release pent-up emotions and tension. Try breathing deeply into your diaphragm and exhaling slowly. This can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body and helps process emotions. Box breathing is a great start: 4 sec inhale, 4 sec hold breath, 4 sec exhale, 4 sec hold. Then repeat 2-3 times.

  • Get Adjusted and Emotionally Aligned: Chiropractic care, combined with NET, can help release stuck emotions while also realigning the body. By addressing both physical and emotional stressors, you can prevent chronic pain from returning.
